Ruxe Ruxe (Vigo)

Ruxe Ruxe (Vigo)

On Friday we had a great gig at La Fábrica de Chocolate in Vigo. Well, I say great, but appart from that it was kind of mental. Two people fainted at the beginning, and it was kind of difficult to stay concentrated.

After the gig I could talk to Ana, one of them, and she was feeling better. I hope Dani, the other guy, feels OK now because I couldn’t talk to him after the show. Some made jokes comparing us with The Beatles, but the truth is you get really worried when you see people suffering while you are working.

Appart from that, the gig was amazing. What a wonderful crowd, they knew all of the songs and they made it clear. I had the time of my life. After the gig we went to a 24-hour café (the one that we always go to after gigs or long nights in Vigo, Ecos) and I ordered a chicken sandwich. I forgot to take a picture because I was starving. The nice Cristian Epartaco (@cristian_espartaco) reminded me of this lapsus, but I shushed him with my mouth full.
The next day I went for a jog, but my legs were kind of tired from the day before, and it was so warm outside that I went walking for a while, bought an avocado and ate it in a park.

I then met Carlos because we were recommended a great restaurant called Ruxe Ruxe (thanks Salva Ronko for that). I always try to visit new restaurants with other people in order to share the food and try more dishes. When we arrived, chef Gerson Iglesias greeted us from the kitchen. After the meal we got the chance to talk to him and he explained he’s heard our music and his little kids are very fond of it. It’s always nice to hear that the little ones like what we do 🙂

So I started scanning the menu. The waiter, Sebastián (who by the way was very nice and did a great job) offered us the tasting menu, but after the avocado I was kind of full. Maybe next time. I saw one dish that said razor clams and kimchi in the same sentence and went for it. Unfortunately they didn’t have it, the waiter kindly explained that it was too warm so seafood was not that good right now. So I have an excuse to come back for the razor clams (I’m having a craving on them lately…don’t know why)

I was going for a white wine, but as they didn’t have the razor clams, we changed that dish for the rice with tendons and scallop tartar (instead of razor clam tartar). So they offered us a nice Ribera del Duero.

They gave us an amuse bouche that was really lovely. Fire-roasted mackerel with guacamole. I enjoyed the fact that they used little pieces of crunchy tortilla to offer some texture and flavour. The fish was perfectly cooked, texture was amazing. The fact that they give you an entrée on the house is a great gesture that we really appreciated.

After that, they brought us the first dish, shrimp thai Ruxe. This dish was my favourite of the day. The noodles were perfectly cooked, the shrimp couldn’t be better. The cut chosen for the seafood was nice and it made the shrimp look beautiful once served on top of the noodles and veggies. It was clear with these two dishes that the chef has a great level of technique, but with the shrimp he also confirmed he knew how to balance flavours perfectly. It had the perfect amount of spice combined with the sweetness of the shrimp and the coconut milk, contrasting with the acidity of the lime. I want to mention that they added some kimchi sauce that, as the waiter said, was made by themselves. Really lovely.

Then, a giant amount of rice came to the table. Carlos and I realized that we said we wanted the “rice for two”, instead of saying it was “to share”. So, they brought us two portions. For us, the amount was massive, but it was good, so we left nothing there. We regretted it afterwards, because I was begging for a coffee for a couple of hours, but had to get ready for an interview (in which I finally got my coffee).

It was worth it, though. I don’t really like eating more than my body asks for, but this dish was really nice. Again, the rice was perfectly cooked, flavours were balanced and the meat and tendons were very nice. Actually it was my first time eating tendons as one of the main ingredients of a dish. The texture was lovely, it tasted and felt like eating fat, but not that heavy. Also, it had a bit of chipotle, I wouldn’t have minded if they added a kg of chipotle though, I’m addicted to it. Oh, and the scallop tartar was an unexpected and great addition.

Because of the double portion, none of us could order dessert, but I’ve heard they are amazing, so it goes to my bucket list. When they brought the bill they gave us a little sponge cake and a piece of chocolate for each. The other waiter was very lovely and said that she understood we were very full, but they wanted to offer us this little sweet treat. Of course, I can’t say no to food and this bite was a perfect ending for a really nice meal. The sponge tasted like orange and the chocolate was dark and had some texture (I can’t really say if it was nuts, cereal, or any other thing but it offered the perfect level of crunch)

I want to mention the wine. As I said, we ordered some Ribera del Duero and it was lovely. Actually, it was all I ask from a Ribera del duero. Soft at first with a great aftertaste. You can’t ask for more. The waiter chose it for us, and he let us taste it first. That is something I really appreciate in restaurants. Drinks are almost as important as food, because if the wine is bad, it can ruin your food. So, I’m really happy they gave us Mironia Crianza. Also, the bread was terribly good. It was galician bread with poppy seeds, and afterwards they brought us linseed bread, also good. I loved it, Carlos fell in love with it, so I’ll post the photo for him.

I usually don’t mention the price of what I eat because I like food and I think some people would rather spend everything they have on food that any other thing (guilty), but I must say the prices for this restaurant seemed cheap for what they have to offer. If you go to a restaurant like this, they normally charge you more for the food.
In general, the experience was a great one. Next time, I’ll make sure I order the right amount, so I’m able to keep doing stuff in the afternoon, or…you know, I’ll go straight to bed and take a nap. Have fun!
