Logroño – What I ate – January 2020 (Day 2)

Logroño – What I ate – January 2020 (Day 2)

We started 2020 working. Logroño was our first stop on the map this year.

We played at Actual Music Festival (January, the 4th) Right before the Epiphany. For those of you who don’t know, the Epiphany in Spain is a greater deal for many than Christmas Day. They usually exchange presents that day instead of December 25th.

The day started with the buffet breakfast at the Hotel. We stayed at Husa Gran Vía, where the breakfast room was very small but they had plenty of options. Special mention to the melon, that both Viña and I loved and commented on for a while. How the hell do they get such sweet and juicy melons at hotels? Haven’t you noticed? It’s uncanny, a mystery. One day I’ll find out where they get their melons. If you know, please tell me.

I was in such a hurry to go have breakfast that when Carlos asked me if I wanted to go downstairs, I didn’t even have time to curl both sides of my hair. I liked it that way though 😂

After a protein-rich breakfast and some hair curling, we headed to the winery.

Right in front of the hotel I found this vegetable patch. Don’t know if they were edible, but I felt tempted to grab one.

The place was beautiful, the technical staff and the people organising the festival were very kind and attentive. Sonia, who was the one making sure everything was ok backstage, goes to the same gym I go. Funny coincidences, she lives in Coruña 🙂

Apparently this was the day of the selfies 😂

We were very punctual to start the soundcheck and we finished exactly when we were supposed to. Boss people.

Here we have the confirmation that it was selfie day.

After an hour and a half moving instruments, soundchecking and making sure everything was ok, we went backstage to relax before we had to start playing.

We had hours to spend, but we were comfortable, so we stayed drinking a glass of wine and snacking on the food that Sonia kindly brought. We had a lot of options backstage to choose.

I saw they had a menu for the audience.

Nice tapas and sandwiches, but the one that really caught my eye was the one that said “artichokes” .

I love artichokes 🙂 I asked Sonia if the kitchen would still be open once we finished playing. This is a common question whenever we’re touring. She wasn’t sure, so she brought me some artichokes just in case 🥰 They were unbelievably crispy and flavourful. I got inspired and draw a Mrs. Artichoke. Yes, I’m that fond of food.

Another photo of the lovely artichokes, just because.

We still had some couple of hours (or four) until it was our turn to play, so I don’t really remember what we did meanwhile. I probably drew a little more, read a while and the three of us chatted and ate something.

Time to play!

Such a wonderful gig! And the audience…incredible. After the show I talked to some of them and they were so nice. At night, going for a walk we met some of them too and were amazing. I’m so grateful for playing in such wonderful spaces, but the people involved is what makes the experience different and unforgettable.

And I’m not talking about the audience alone…I’m also including the technical stuff that were so nice and friendly.

But of course, food tastes even better after you play drums for an hour. We ate a sandwich and picked up the backline. For a couple of minutes we thought they’ve left us inside, and the jokes about being left at a winery were many. Carlos decided to play for a while.

And after everything was clean and tidy, we headed to the hotel to rest for a while. For a minute there I thought I was asleep, but I decided to get unready and go out to have dinner. Yes, I usually get ready to work and then I get more comfortable, put on a comfy t-shirt and running shoes or less make up if I’m feeling like it. A girl has gotta live 😂

I was still full from the sandwiches, but Viña and Carlos were in the mood for food.

We ended up in calle San Juan, recommended by Sonia, Rafa (one of the organisers) and a group of girls in the audience. I was full and tired, but I made the effort to take the photos for you. You’re welcome.

Although this pintxo had fish, you can probably tell them if they don’t mind making you one from scratch without the salmon if you are a vegetarian. Or, hey…if you are vegan, ask for the guacamole on its own 🙂

Serious Carlos copying me

They didn’t order any vegan or vegetarian option, but to be honest I don’t think they had one in this place. Not sure, though. Plenty of fish options for pescetarians.

A while later, I started getting jealous and we went to a place called Torres

They had different pintxos from what you usually see. I ended up eating a couple of them and as I didn’t see any vegetable choice, I had the Txangurro Lasagna and the Squid with Plancton and green curry. Both were delicious and colourful.

Textures were as they should be and the amount was perfect for me. A couple of tapas and I was full.

I loved how the “white part” of the txangurro lasagna, a thick layer of cream cheese, combined perfectly with the rest of the layers and gave a fresh note to the whole recipe.

We wanted to go for a little walk after dinner and found a place where they had a dartboard, so we couldn’t resist.

After a couple of games, we went back to the hotel, we were tired but at the same time we wanted to chat for a while. The perfect scenario: water with lemon at the hotel lobby.

They had complementary marzipans at the bar and I don’t know why I sarted nagging Carlos with one of them. This nagging lasted until Carlos managed to hide the marzipans from me. I am a wise woman, I found them and decided to eat them, in case he wanted to hide them again 🙂

I kept at it for a while 😅

The next day, after enjoying a nice breakfast and a walk by the river, we hit the road again.

We arrived home after sunset, which I love. Watching the sunrise and the sunset always makes me feel present and grateful. Watching it while you are driving makes it almost impossible to think about anything else.

I am so grateful for those couple of days in Logroño to start the year with the best intentions. I am eager to see what else 2020 is going to bring me. I am anticipating it’s going to be quite a year.

Doing what you love is so important, that’s why I try to live everyday with that in mind. It doesn’t have to be performing in a venue full of people everyday. It can be eating at your favourite restaurant, meeting your best friend, reading a wonderful book, getting wet under the rain or staying in bed because you feel sad. Whatever it is, do what you love every day, it changes with the season, but always…have fun and keep fooding! 😉
